This simple yet delicious Irish Soda Bread is a staple in Irish households. With its crisp crust and tender crumb, it pairs beautifully with a hearty beef and Guinness stew, or equally well with butter and jam.
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
Make a well in the center and gradually add buttermilk, stirring until a dough forms.
Lightly flour a surface and knead the dough gently for about a minute—don’t overwork it!
Shape into a round loaf, place on the baking tray, and cut a deep cross on top.
Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool slightly before serving with butter, cheese, or jam.
Notes
If you don't have Buttermilk, add 2 Tbspn. white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 3/4 Cups of regular milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until thickened slightly and use in the recipe.
